安·德鲁彦寄语《三思科学》

以下为萨根的夫人Ann Druyan给三思科学杂志编辑部的来信之译文：
收到你们美妙的信和《梁祝》的唱片，我深受感动。
能够收到这个星球上各地因卡尔·萨根而觉醒的人们的来信，
这是我的财富。每当读到这些信的时候，我都在心中思忖这样的
一个奇迹，那就是，卡尔·萨根作为一个人，要比起他远远地通
过其伟大作品所表现出来的更加令人感动。他完全值得信赖、温
文尔雅，并且非常善良。他是一个具有非凡勇气的人。
你们向我寻求鼓励，我愿以全心给予。我深信，作为一个物
种，我们唯一的希望在于领悟科学所揭示的以及卡尔教给我们的
宇宙观。我们需要学会如何了解关于我们在这个宇宙中的实际状
况的信息，从而影响到我们的行动：原教旨主义、民族主义、迷
信和种族主义——当我们以大宇宙为背景的时候，它们都狭隘得
可怜。我们需要培养一种更重要的神圣情怀，把地球上的生命自
远古以来的延续性看得高于一切，甚至高于金钱和权力。
卡尔总是努力帮助我们认识到：我们生活在一个暗淡蓝点上，
那是拥有四十亿星辰的星系中的一颗微尘，而这个星系本身也不
过是数量更加巨大的千亿个星系中的一个……这一伟大的科学见
解具有伦理和精神的意蕴……带着怀疑和惊叹——两者缺一不可
——我们能够学会在这颗行星上共存，或许有一天能飞向其它恒
星。
在卡尔去世的五年之后，他依然活在那些由他所唤醒并被科
学所吸引的人们的心中。
我谨祝你们事业有成，并希望在未来的某个时候，我们的人
生道路能够交汇。

I was deeply touched to receive your wonderful letter and The
Butterfly Lovers cd.
It's my good fortune to hear from people all over the planet who
credit Carl with their awakenings. Whenever I read these messages I
think to myself that the wonder of it is that Carl Sagan was even
more impressive in person than he appeared to be from a distance
through his great works. He was completely authentic, gentle and
very kind. He was an exceptionally brave man.
You ask me for some encouragement. I give it with all my heart. I
believe that our only hope as a species is to grasp the cosmic
perspective that science reveals and that Carl taught. We need to
learn how to take this information about our actual circumstances in
the universe so that it influences our actions: Fundamentalism,
nationalism, superstition, racism--seem pathetically narrow when
viewed in the cosmic context. We need to develop a more
consequential sense of the sacred, one that values the ancient
continuity of life on Earth above everything, even money and power.
Carl was always trying to help us see that we live on a pale blue
dot, tiny in a galaxy of four billion suns, which itself is only one
in the greater vastness of a hundred billion galaxies. . .That there
are ethical and spiritual implications of this grand scientific
insight. . . That with skepticism and wonder, both, never one without
the other, we could learn to live together on this planet and
perhaps, even one day go to the stars.
Five years after Carl's death he lives in the minds he awakened and
attracted to science.
I wish you every success in the work you're doing and hope that our
paths will someday cross.

尊敬的安·德鲁彦夫人：
我们是一小群在业余时间致力于通过互联网在中国宣扬科学
精神和科学观念的热心者。我们设立了一个非盈利的科普网站，
并发行一份（可能是唯一一份中文的）大众科学电子杂志。作为
计算机程序员、生物化学教师、外科医生、大学学生和科学新闻
记者，可以说我们每一个人会走上科学传播的道路都与卡尔·萨
根先生有直接或者间接的联系。
作为十三亿中国人中的成员，我们一边为我们的祖国深深的
自豪，一面也看到在辉煌文明中所不可避免的不足和遗憾。正如
萨根先生在其生前最后一部伟大著作——《魔鬼出没的世界》中
写的一样，在今天甚至就在我给您写这封信的时候，伪科学、反
科学和神秘主义的糟粕依然在有着五千年历史的中华大地上四处
游荡。这些这些不利于青少年健康成长的思潮正在毒害着我们年
轻的一代，而一些伪科学的骗术也正在疯狂的搜刮着老百姓的钱
包。
中华民族在性格上是含蓄的，这被称为东方人的美德。然而
作为年轻的一代，我们无法坐视我们伟大的祖国和我们善良的人
民被欺骗、被愚弄，尤其是在阅读了萨根先生的伟大作品以后。
虽然电视系列片《宇宙》尚未在中国上映，但我们已经有了《宇
宙》（书）、《魔鬼出没的世界》、《伊甸园的飞龙》、《暗淡
